Bergamo and the Lakes in Winter: What to Do Nov-Jan

Picking up a car at Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) in late autumn or early winter puts you within 15 minutes of Bergamo's medieval upper town and an easy hour's drive from Lake Como and Lake Iseo. Crowds are thin, hotel rates drop after mid-November, and on a clear cold day the Alps appear over the rooftops of Città Alta in a way that simply does not happen in summer. The trade-off is short daylight, frequent fog in the lower Po Valley, and a string of villa gardens and boat services that trim their hours or close entirely - plan around those and the season works strongly in your favour.

In short

  • Pick-up: Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) - car rental desks are in or beside the terminal building; WoopDrive hands over physical keys on collection.
  • BGY to Bergamo city centre is approximately 15 minutes by car in normal traffic; to Città Alta allow an extra 5-10 minutes to find parking.
  • Daylight: roughly 9.5 hours in November, shrinking to about 8.7 hours by late December - plan outdoor stops before 4 p.m.
  • Città Alta has a ZTL (restricted traffic zone); parking is permitted but you must enter via the authorised route and park within 30 minutes in a designated lot (Via della Fara, Via delle Tre Armi or Porta S. Alessandro).
  • Lake ferry services run on reduced winter timetables from mid-November; check schedules before planning a lake loop by car.
  • Accademia Carrara is closed Tuesdays; confirm holiday hours on the official site before visiting on 25 Dec, 31 Dec or 1 Jan.

Do you need a car in Bergamo itself?

For Bergamo city alone, a car is not essential. The airport bus (ATB Line 1) runs every 20 minutes from BGY to the train station, the lower funicular stop and all the way to Colle Aperto in Città Alta - the journey takes roughly 25-30 minutes to the upper town. The historic funicular then connects the lower and upper cities. Where a car adds real value is for day trips to Lake Como (about 55 minutes from BGY), Lake Iseo (about 35 minutes), and the mountain valleys north of Bergamo, all of which have poor or slow public transport links in winter.

Weather: what to expect November through January

November brings cool, damp conditions - highs around 11°C, lows around 4°C, with roughly 13 rainy days across the month and only about 3 hours of sunshine per day. December is colder (highs around 7°C, lows near 0°C) with occasional snow from mid-month and persistent fog in the lower city on some mornings, though that fog usually burns off by mid-morning. January is the coldest month, with average lows near -2°C, but also the driest. On the clear, sharp days that break the fog in all three months, the Alps appear over Bergamo's rooftops at their most dramatic.

Waterproof ankle boots with grip matter more than a heavy coat on Bergamo's cobblestones - the streets in Città Alta are steep and slick when wet or lightly frosted. Pack layers rather than bulk.

Bergamo: Città Alta and its winter draws

Città Alta - Venetian Walls, Piazza Vecchia, Christmas market

The UNESCO-listed Venetian Walls are walkable year-round and reward a clear winter morning with views across the Po Valley and toward the Alps. Piazza Vecchia, the Cappella Colleoni and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore are all in a compact area; allow 2-3 hours on foot. In December, Christmas lights fill the old streets and market stalls appear in the squares - some markets run only on selected weekends, so verify dates before travelling specifically for them. The funicular from Città Bassa up to Città Alta is a practical and atmospheric way to make the ascent.

Drive
Approximately 15 minutes from BGY in normal traffic.
Parking
Enter Città Alta only via the authorised route (Conca d'Oro Gallery roundabout on Viale Vittorio Emanuele II). Parking is allowed even during ZTL hours but you must park within 30 minutes in a designated lot: Via della Fara, Via delle Tre Armi or Porta S. Alessandro. Alternatively, park in Città Bas
Time to allow
Allow a half-day minimum; a full day if you include the Accademia Carrara below.
Families
The funicular ride is short and popular with children. The walls walk is pushchair-accessible in parts but has uneven cobblestone sections.

Accademia Carrara - five centuries of Italian art

One of Italy's most significant art collections, with works by Raphael, Botticelli, Mantegna, Bellini, Titian and a strong Lombard school including Moroni. The neoclassical building at the foot of Città Alta is warm, well-lit and uncrowded in winter - exactly the conditions that suit a long look. Allow 2-3 hours. The museum is closed on Tuesdays and has special reduced hours on 31 December and opens on 1 January and 6 January - check lacarrara.it for confirmed holiday hours before visiting. The GAMeC contemporary art gallery is directly across the street for a contrasting second stop.

Drive
5-minute walk from the Città Alta funicular lower station; or drive from BGY in about 15 minutes.
Parking
Città Bassa street parking (paid) is more accessible here than Città Alta lots.
Time to allow
Open Mon, Wed-Sun 10:00-19:00; closed Tuesdays. Last entry 45 minutes before closing. Special evening openings on the last Friday of each month.
Families
Good for older children interested in art; free entry on the first Sunday of the month.

Day trip 1: Lake Como in winter

Lake Como in November through January is quieter, cheaper and genuinely atmospheric - the narrow streets of Varenna and Menaggio feel like your own. The trade-off is honest: many villa gardens are closed, private boat tours mostly stop in November, and the ferry runs on a reduced winter timetable with fewer crossings, tying you to set departure times. Plan outdoor lakefront walks for the morning before light fades behind the western mountains around 4:30 p.m.

  • Como city (Piazza Cavour, Duomo, Città dei Balocchi Christmas event): The 'Città dei Balocchi' Christmas market and light event animates Como city from late November into early January. The Como-Brunate funicular runs year-round and gives views of the Alps and the lake.
  • Villa Balbianello (Lenno): The villa building reopens on Fridays, Saturdays and Tuesdays through December, then on specific early January dates, with full reopening in March. The terraced gardens close mid-November. Always check fondoambiente.it for exact winter dates.
  • Varenna: A scenic village with good rail connections from Lecco; less affected by reduced ferry service than mid-lake towns. The Passeggiata degli Innamorati lakeside walk gives fine winter views. Villa Monastero grounds are open at reduced weekend hours in winter.
  • Bellagio: The Giardini di Villa Melzi close for the season at the end of October and reopen in March. The town itself is accessible all day and worth a winter wander - cafes are open and crowds are minimal.

Ferry services between lake towns run on a reduced winter timetable. If you are driving, you can reach Varenna, Como and Bellagio by road without needing a ferry at all - but check your rental conditions before taking any car-ferry crossing, as some rental agreements exclude this.

Day trip 2: Lake Iseo - the low-key alternative

Lake Iseo and Monte Isola

Lake Iseo is 25-30 km east of Bergamo, the least visited of the major Lombard lakes and genuinely lovely in winter. The lakeside town of Iseo itself has a historic centre, waterfront promenade and good restaurants. Monte Isola, the large car-free island in the centre of the lake, is reachable by ferry from Sulzano or Sale Marasino - but check the winter ferry timetable before planning around it. The road running south along the western shore (SP510) has dramatic cliff sections; these can be slow in heavy rain or if there is any ice, so allow extra time and check conditions in January.

Drive
Approximately 35-40 minutes from BGY via the A4 toward Brescia, then SP469 south - approximate in normal traffic.
Parking
Paid parking in Iseo town; free parking at Sulzano ferry point.
Time to allow
Half-day for the town and lakefront; full day if you cross to Monte Isola.
Families
Flat lakeside paths are good for young children. Monte Isola crossing adds novelty.

Milan from Bergamo: when it makes sense

Milan is roughly an hour from BGY by car in normal traffic (A4 motorway, but expect queues at peak hours and around major junctions). In winter it has real draws: the La Scala opera season opens on 7 December, December brings Christmas markets around the Duomo and Castello Sforzesco, and January brings the winter sales. For Milan specifically, the car is not the tool - park at a peripheral metro station (e.g. Sesto FS or Molino Dorino) and use the metro into the centre. For Da Vinci's Last Supper, advance booking is compulsory even in winter; tickets sell out weeks ahead on the official site.

If you are based in Bergamo and want to see Milan, consider a day by train (Bergamo to Milano Centrale, roughly 50 minutes, frequent service) and save the car for the lake day trips where public transport is genuinely slow or infrequent in winter.

Driving notes for the season

  • Fog: The Po Valley fog (nebbia) can be dense in November and December mornings, especially on flat stretches between BGY and Como or Milan. Delay departure by an hour if visibility is poor - it usually lifts by mid-morning.
  • Snow and ice: Snow is possible in Bergamo city from mid-December and more likely on any route climbing toward the lakes or into the Bergamasque pre-Alps. Winter tyres are required in Lombardy on many mountain roads from 15 November; check your rental agreement to confirm the car is equipped.
  • Lake Como road: The SS340 and SS583 hugging the western Como shore are narrow and have sections cut into cliff face - slow down and use passing places; there is no rushing these roads in any season.
  • ZTL awareness: Bergamo's Città Alta ZTL is active at certain hours; the car park entry from Colle Aperto is always permitted, but Città Bassa also has ZTL zones - check signs carefully.
  • Gravel and unpaved tracks: Some minor roads to mountain rifugi or rural wineries are unpaved. Check your rental conditions before turning off tarmac - most standard rental agreements exclude unsurfaced roads.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lake Como worth visiting in November and December?

Yes, with adjusted expectations. Towns like Varenna, Menaggio and Como city itself are calm and photogenic. Many villa gardens are closed and private boat tours mostly stop by November, but the lake scenery, lakefront walks and Como's Christmas market (Città dei Balocchi) are genuine draws. Ferry services run but on reduced timetables - check schedules at navigazionelaghi.it before relying on them.

Can I drive to Città Alta in Bergamo?

You can drive in to park, but the only authorised entry route is via the Conca d'Oro Gallery roundabout on Viale Vittorio Emanuele II, and you must park within 30 minutes in a designated lot. Driving freely around the historic upper town is restricted by a ZTL. Most visitors find it easier to park in Città Bassa and use the funicular or bus.

Do I need snow tyres for a winter rental in this area?

Lombardy requires winter tyres (or chains carried) on many mountain and secondary roads from 15 November to 15 April. WoopDrive rental cars collected at BGY should be equipped for local requirements, but confirm this at pick-up and check your rental agreement. If you plan to drive mountain routes toward ski resorts or into the pre-Alps, ask specifically.

How far is BGY from central Milan by car?

Approximately 45-50 km via the A4 motorway. In normal traffic the drive takes about 50-60 minutes, but morning rush hour toward Milan and evening rush hour returning can push this to 90 minutes. The train from Bergamo station to Milano Centrale is often faster and more predictable.

Can I take the rental car on a Lake Como ferry?

Car ferries operate on Lake Como (e.g. the Bellagio-Varenna crossing). Whether your rental agreement permits this is a separate question - check your specific rental conditions with WoopDrive before boarding any ferry with the car.
