Troodos in winter by car: snow, skiing and mountain villages (December to March)

In January you can drink coffee by the sea in Larnaca at 17 °C and stand in snow below the summit of Mount Olympos the same morning. The Troodos range rises to 1,952 m in the middle of the island, and from December to March its upper roads, pine forests and stone villages live by a different calendar from the coast. This guide follows the mountain itself: the ski slopes on Chionistra, the frescoed churches of the valleys, Kykkos monastery and the Caledonia waterfall, with the road checks that decide whether a snow day works.

In short

  • Mount Olympos (Chionistra) is the highest point of Cyprus at 1,952 m; the ski lifts on its slopes start at 09:00 on days with enough snow.
  • The ski season in a normal year runs from early January to the end of March; dates for 2026/27 depend on snowfall and are not announced in advance.
  • January averages: about 17 °C by day and 8 °C at night in Larnaca and Paphos, but about 6 °C and 1 °C in the mountain village of Prodromos.
  • Ten painted churches of the Troodos are a UNESCO World Heritage Site; in winter they open Tuesday to Saturday 10:00-16:30 and Sunday 11:00-16:30.
  • After snowfall the police can limit the Platres, Karvounas and Prodromos roads to Troodos to four-wheel-drive or chain-fitted vehicles, or close them.
  • Cyprus drives on the left; the motorway limit is 100 km/h and the blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l.

Two climates, one island

The contrast is the reason to go. In January Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos average around 17 °C by day and 8-9 °C at night, while Prodromos, one of the highest villages in the range, averages about 6 °C by day and barely above freezing at night. On a clear day after a storm you drive out of orange groves, climb through black pines and arrive among snow-laden branches with views back to the sea. Pack a warm jacket, gloves and proper shoes even if the coast feels like spring.

Which way up

  • From Larnaca: take the motorway towards Limassol and climb from there. Troodos Square is about 97 km and roughly 1 hour 45 minutes away; the lace village of Pano Lefkara is a short detour on the way.
  • From Limassol: the closest base, about 50 minutes from Troodos Square, climbing past Platres on the southern slope.
  • From Paphos: about 1 hour 15 minutes through the wine villages, with Omodos a short detour before Platres.
  • From the north: Kakopetria and the Solea valley lead up from the Nicosia side and are the natural start for the painted churches.

Skiing on Mount Olympos

The Cyprus Ski Club runs the ski area on Chionistra, the summit of Mount Olympos, right above Troodos Square. Four lifts serve two sectors: a 380 m chairlift on the Zeus slope and a T-bar on the Hera slope on the North Face, and two short T-bars in Sun Valley, plus a baby lift for first-timers. The runs suit beginners as well as intermediate skiers, so think of a half-day on skis or a first snow day with children rather than a ski holiday. Lifts start at 09:00 when they run, and the club has a ski shop on site.

The painted churches in winter

From the outside they look like barns: small stone churches under steep wooden roofs, built that way against the mountain snow. Inside, the walls are covered with Byzantine and post-Byzantine frescoes painted between the 11th and the 16th centuries. Nine churches were inscribed by UNESCO in 1985 and a tenth was added in 2001. From 16 September to 15 April all ten open Tuesday to Saturday 10:00-16:30 without a midday break and Sunday 11:00-16:30; they close on Mondays, at Christmas, at Easter and during Holy Week.

Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, Kakopetria

St Nicholas of the Roof takes its name from the wooden roof built over its domes. It began as an 11th-century monastery and is the oldest surviving monastery church in Cyprus. Kakopetria has a restored old quarter of stone houses and wooden balconies above the river, good for lunch before or after.

Drive
On the north side of the range, below Troodos Square on the road towards Nicosia.
Parking
Park in Kakopetria or by the church; the old lanes are narrow and steep.
Time to allow
Winter UNESCO hours, closed on Mondays.
Families
Short visit inside; the cobbled old quarter is uneven with a buggy.

Panagia Phorviotissa (Asinou), Nikitari

Alone in the northern foothills near Nikitari, Asinou is a 12th-century church whose narthex holds a fresco of Christ Pantocrator. It feels remote even on a weekend.

Drive
Near Nikitari; combine it with Kakopetria on the same side of the mountain.
Parking
Park by the church; bring water and snacks, as there is nothing nearby.
Time to allow
Winter UNESCO hours; check before a Sunday visit.
Families
Open countryside around the church for a short walk.

Pedoulas and Kalopanagiotis, Marathasa valley

Two villages of the Marathasa valley each hold a UNESCO church: the late 15th-century Archangelos Michael in Pedoulas and the 13th-century monastery of Agios Ioannis Lampadistis in Kalopanagiotis. In winter the orchards stand bare and wood smoke rises from the chimneys.

Drive
On the western side of the range; Kykkos is 13 km beyond Pedoulas.
Parking
Use the parking areas at the village edges; the centres are steep.
Time to allow
Both keep the winter UNESCO hours.
Families
Easy to combine with Kykkos for a full day.

Kykkos Monastery

The best known monastery in Cyprus sits at 1,318 m on a forested ridge north-west of Troodos, and its museum displays the monastery's icons and church treasures. On a snowy morning the drive through the pines from Pedoulas is one of the finest in the mountains.

Drive
13 km from Pedoulas on a winding forest road.
Parking
Parking beside the monastery.
Time to allow
Museum daily 10:00-16:00 from November to May, closed on public holidays. Dress modestly.
Families
The courtyards are easy to explore; the museum suits older children.

The southern slope: Caledonia, Platres and Omodos

Caledonia trail and waterfall

The best known walk in the Troodos is a linear trail of 3 km through black pines and plane trees along a stream to the Caledonia waterfall, which drops 13 m over dark gabbro rock. In winter the stream runs high and the falls are at their strongest. Walk it downhill from the upper end near Troodos Square to Psilo Dentro above Pano Platres.

Drive
Upper start about 500 m from Troodos Square; lower start at Psilo Dentro above Pano Platres.
Parking
Small parking areas at both ends; with one car, walk down and back.
Time to allow
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours one way. The Forestry Department can close Troodos trails after snow or landslides, as it did for a month in early 2024.
Families
Stream crossings and slippery stones: waterproof boots needed, better for older children.

Platres, the old hill resort of the southern slope, has tavernas and fireplaces for lunch after the waterfall. Further down, Omodos is a wine village at around 800 m with a cobbled square in front of the monastery of the Holy Cross. Coming from Larnaca, Pano Lefkara, known for its lace, makes a good coffee break.

Snow days: closures, chains and road checks

  • After snowfall the Cyprus Police announce the state of the three main approaches, Platres-Troodos, Karvounas-Troodos and Prodromos-Troodos: open but slippery, open only to four-wheel-drive vehicles or cars with snow chains, or closed. In January 2026 all three were restricted to 4x4 or chain-fitted vehicles more than once.
  • The status is set road by road and can differ on the same day, so check the latest police announcements and local news before you leave the coast.
  • Do not assume a rental car carries chains. Ask at pick-up and read the WoopDrive rental conditions for mountain roads before you drive up.
  • Fog is common on the upper slopes: use dipped headlights and keep a long gap.
  • Fill the tank before you climb, keep warm clothes in the car and plan to be down before dark.

Driving rules in Cyprus

  • Traffic drives on the left, and roundabouts run clockwise.
  • Speed limits: 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on motorways, with a minimum of 65 km/h there; mountain roads are signed lower.
  • The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and 0.2 g/l for drivers with a licence held for less than three years.
  • Seat belts are compulsory in front and back; hand-held phones are banned while driving.
