Málaga and Andalusia in spring by car: Semana Santa, Caminito del Rey and the white villages (March to May)
Spring is when inland Andalusia looks its best: green hills behind Málaga, flamingos on the lagoon at Fuente de Piedra and the limestone maze of El Torcal cool enough to walk at midday. In the city, Holy Week fills the centre with processions for seven days and the Spanish Legion lands in the port on Holy Thursday. From Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) the Caminito del Rey is under an hour by car, Antequera about an hour, Setenil de las Bodegas and the Sierra de Grazalema around two. This guide covers Semana Santa 2027 and its parking, the Caminito del Rey booking rules, spring stops not found in our other Málaga guides, and the driving rules that matter in Spain.

Why spring is the season for inland Andalusia
From March to May the hills are green, highs climb from about 20 C to 25 C and it rains on three to five days a month. The Caminito del Rey names March and April as the best months for the flowers in the gorge, and the flamingo colony at Fuente de Piedra peaks in April. The week to plan around is Semana Santa: hotels fill, the centre of Málaga closes to cars every afternoon and the coast roads are busy on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, both public holidays in Andalusia.
Semana Santa 2027 in Málaga: dates and what you will see
In 2027 Holy Week falls early: Palm Sunday is 21 March and Easter Sunday 28 March. Málaga's Semana Santa has been a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional since 1980; its 41 brotherhoods, grouped in the Agrupación de Cofradías founded in 1921, stage more than 40 processions in a week. What sets Málaga apart is the trono, a huge open platform weighing up to several tonnes, carried on long beams by more than 250 hombres de trono who walk in step to a bell. Every procession passes the recorrido oficial along Calle Marqués de Larios, where seats are sold by subscription; everywhere else is free.
- Palm Sunday (21 March): the Pollinica, the children's brotherhood, opens the week in the morning; eight more follow.
- Holy Monday: the Cautivo, the white-robed Christ known as the Señor de Málaga, draws some of the biggest crowds.
- Holy Wednesday: the brotherhood of El Rico frees a prisoner, a privilege attributed to King Carlos III.
- Holy Thursday (25 March): the Legion lands in the port and escorts the Cristo de Mena in the evening; the Virgen de la Esperanza blesses the city from the Plaza de la Constitución.
- Good Friday (26 March): the Santo Sepulcro, the city's official brotherhood, processes with the municipal corporation.
- Easter Sunday (28 March): the Resucitado closes the week.

Holy Thursday: the Legion and the Cristo de Mena
Early on Holy Thursday a Navy ship brings a company of the Legion into the port; in 2026 it docked at 10:00 at Muelle Dos, beside the Palmeral de las Sorpresas. The legionaries march along Muelle Uno to the Plaza de Fray Alonso de Santo Tomás, by the church of Santo Domingo on the Guadalmedina river, where at midday they carry the crucified Christ out on their shoulders singing El Novio de la Muerte, their hymn of 1921. The first landing took place in 1930; the procession leaves in the early evening. Arrive early: the quays and the square fill long before.
Parking and street closures during Holy Week
- On procession days the Alameda Principal, Paseo del Parque, Plaza de la Marina and Calle Córdoba close from 15:00 until the last trono is home, often after 02:00; from Holy Wednesday to Good Friday they stay closed around the clock.
- The council advises against driving to the centre at all. The Camas and Tejón y Rodríguez car parks close with the streets; Cervantes, Andalucía, San Juan de la Cruz, Salitre and Cruz del Humilladero stay open a short walk away.
- Park before 14:00 and move on foot or by EMT bus, which ran until 02:30 to 03:00 in 2026.
Caminito del Rey: how to book and where to park
Caminito del Rey
The walkway pinned to the walls of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes is the most popular day out in the province, and in spring the wildflowers, the vultures and the Bonelli's eagles are at their best. The route is linear and one way, 8 km from the northern access in Ardales to El Chorro (Álora), including the approach to the control cabin where tickets are scanned and helmets handed out; allow three to four hours. Tickets are sold on caminitodelrey.info: 10 EUR general, 18 EUR guided. No children under 8; 8 to 17 year olds need an adult and ID. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00, last entries 14:50 or 17:20 by season; closed on Mondays and in strong wind or rain, when tickets can be exchanged online.
- Drive
- About 60 km from Málaga airport on the A-357 towards Ardales, a little under an hour.
- Parking
- Reception Centre car park (2 EUR a day, bookable with the ticket) or the municipal car park by El Kiosko at the northern access, or the car park at the El Chorro exit. The shuttle bus between them runs 7:40 to 19:00 and costs 2.50 EUR, cash only.
- Time to allow
- Be at the access 30 minutes before your ticket time; the control cabin is a 25-minute walk from El Kiosko. Closed shoes with a secured heel are compulsory. No dogs.
- Families
- Children from 8 with an adult; no buggies.

Antequera, El Torcal and the flamingos of Fuente de Piedra
El Torcal de Antequera and the Antequera dolmens
El Torcal is a limestone plateau above 1,200 m eroded into towers, corridors and stacked discs, part of the Antequera Dolmens Site inscribed by UNESCO in 2016 with the dolmens of Menga, Viera and El Romeral. Two marked circular trails leave the Torcal Alto visitor centre, the green route (1.5 km, about 45 minutes) and the yellow route (3 km, about two hours), free and without booking. The dolmens at the edge of Antequera are also free and closed on Mondays.
- Drive
- About 45 minutes to an hour from Málaga airport: A-45 to the Casabermeja exit, then the A-7075 to the Torcal Alto turn at kilometre 42.
- Parking
- The Torcal Alto car park is small. On weekends, holidays and busy days the last stretch of road closes to cars in the morning; park at the lower car park and take the shuttle bus, 2 EUR return.
- Time to allow
- Visitor centre 10:00 to 17:00 until the end of March, 10:00 to 19:00 from April.
- Families
- The green route is an easy loop; the rock is slippery after rain.
Laguna de Fuente de Piedra
North-west of Antequera lies the second largest wetland of the Iberian Peninsula and the most important inland lagoon in Europe for the greater flamingo. The birds arrive from February and in a normal spring more than 30,000 gather in April to nest; numbers depend on the winter rain, because the shallow lagoon dries out in summer. The José Antonio Valverde visitor centre on the northern shore has exhibitions, viewpoints and short trails. Bring binoculars: the colony stays far from the shore.
- Drive
- About 73 km from Málaga, a little over an hour: A-45 north, A-92 west to exit 132, then the MA-701 through the village.
- Parking
- Car park at the visitor centre.
- Time to allow
- Visitor centre hours vary by season; check before you go.
- Families
- Flat paths and hides at child height.

Setenil de las Bodegas and the Sierra de Grazalema
Setenil de las Bodegas
Of all the white villages west of Málaga, Setenil looks like nowhere else: its houses are built under the overhanging rock of the Río Trejo, so whole streets run beneath a stone ceiling. See Calle Cuevas del Sol, sunny and lined with bars, and Calle Cuevas de la Sombra across the river, in permanent shade; above them stand the church and the castle keep. Setenil holds its own processions on Holy Thursday and Good Friday and is busy on spring weekends, so a weekday morning is calmest. Ronda, a short drive away, is covered in our day-trips guide.
- Drive
- About 100 km from Málaga airport, around 1 hour 35 minutes via Ardales and Ronda.
- Parking
- The lanes are too narrow for cars. Use the car park by the first roundabout at the entrance or the overflow car park by the football ground.
- Time to allow
- Free to walk; allow two hours with lunch.
- Families
- Steep steps between upper and lower town.
Grazalema and Zahara de la Sierra
West of Ronda the road climbs into the Sierra de Grazalema natural park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve and the greenest corner of Andalusia thanks to the highest rainfall in the region: in spring the valleys are full of wildflowers and the pinsapo, a rare fir endemic to these mountains, is at its freshest. Grazalema is the whitewashed village that gives the range its name; the Pinsapar trail needs a permit from the Junta de Andalucía. From there the CA-9104 climbs over the Puerto de las Palomas pass at 1,190 m, with a summit car park and a huge view, then drops in 15 km of hairpins to Zahara de la Sierra, stacked below a hilltop castle above a reservoir.
- Drive
- About 120 km from Málaga airport to Grazalema, 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours via Ronda; Zahara is a short drive beyond.
- Parking
- Car parks at the entrance of both villages. The pass road reaches 14 percent gradients, so drive it in daylight.
- Time to allow
- A long day or a night in Grazalema; the trails are at their best in April and May.
- Families
- Zahara's castle climb is short and rewarding.

Frigiliana, the Nerja caves and the Axarquía in brief
Nerja is about an hour east of the airport; Nerja and Frigiliana are covered in our day-trips guide. One spring note: the Cueva de Nerja extends its hours in Holy Week, from the Friday before Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, opening 9:15 to 17:30 with last entry at 16:30; its car park is paid by the minute. Beyond Frigiliana the mountain villages of the Axarquía make a slow April drive while the hills are still green.
Spring weather, the sea and the Feria de Abril
- March: highs around 20 C, nights near 10 C, about 50 mm of rain on four days. El Torcal and Grazalema are several degrees cooler; carry a jacket for the evening processions.
- April: highs around 22 C, nights near 11 C, 45 mm of rain on five days. Peak month for flamingos and wildflowers.
- May: highs around 25 C, nights near 14 C, 20 mm of rain on three days. Walk El Torcal and the Caminito in the morning.
- The sea: 15 C in March, 16 C in April and 17 C in May; comfortable swimming starts in June.
- Feria de Abril in Seville: expected from Monday 12 April to Sunday 18 April 2027; the city confirms the dates each year. Seville is about 200 km and a little over two hours from Málaga by motorway.
Driving in Andalusia in spring: the rules that matter
- Speed limits for cars: 120 km/h on motorways and dual carriageways, 90 km/h on other roads outside towns, 50 km/h on urban roads with two or more lanes per direction, 30 km/h on streets with one lane per direction, 20 km/h where pavement and road are on one level.
- Alcohol limit 0.5 g/l of blood, 0.3 g/l in the first two years of licence. Roadside checks are frequent around Holy Week.
- Central Málaga is a low emission zone (ZBE) with cameras that read the DGT environmental label. Cars without a label registered outside the city are fined 200 EUR; an extension to B-label cars from outside Málaga, planned for late November 2026, is under legal review. Rental cars carry a C, ECO or Cero label as a rule; check the windscreen sticker before driving into the centre.
- Keep the reflective vest within reach. Spanish-registered cars, rental cars included, must carry a V-16 warning beacon since 1 January 2026; check it is in the car at pick-up.
- Children under 1.35 m need an approved child seat in the back; ask for one at booking.
- Historic centres such as Ronda, Antequera, Setenil and Grazalema have narrow lanes and resident-only zones; park at the edge and walk. Fines reach the driver through the rental company. The inland roads in this guide are toll-free.

Yes. Tickets are sold on caminitodelrey.info for a fixed entry time, 10 EUR general or 18 EUR with a guide, and spring weekends sell out well ahead. Closed on Mondays; no children under 8; arrive 30 minutes before your slot.
Where do I park for the Caminito del Rey?
At the northern access in Ardales (reception centre car park, 2 EUR a day, or the municipal car park by El Kiosko) or at the southern exit in El Chorro. A shuttle bus links the two ends from 7:40 to 19:00 for 2.50 EUR in cash.
