Mallorca in Winter: What to Do from November to January

From November to January, Mallorca trades summer crowds for quiet roads, green mountain scenery and a full calendar of local festivals. Daytime temperatures stay comfortably in the 14-20 °C range, attractions stay open with shorter queues, and the island's most famous scenic drives are at their best. A rental car from Palma Airport (PMI) is the single most useful tool for unlocking the island outside the capital.

In short

  • November averages 14-20 °C by day, December 12-16 °C, January 9-15 °C - layers needed for evenings.
  • November is the wettest month (around 50-73 mm); December and January are drier with roughly 35-47 mm each.
  • Cap de Formentor car restrictions ran 15 May to 18 October 2026 - by November you can drive the full road any time.
  • Coves del Drach (Dragon Caves) run 4 tours per day in winter (10:30, 12:00, 14:00, 15:30); closed 25 Dec and 1 Jan only.
  • Palma Cathedral winter hours: Mon-Sat 10:00-15:15; closed Sundays.
  • Many northern resort hotels close November-March; Palma and main towns stay fully operational.

Why winter is a smart time to visit Mallorca

Winter in Mallorca means peaceful roads, shorter queues at the top sights and prices that reflect the low season. The island's coastal location keeps temperatures mild compared with the rest of Europe: November still touches 20 °C on good days, and even January rarely dips below 9 °C at night. Pack a waterproof and a mid-layer - especially for the mountains - and the island is entirely walkable, driveable and enjoyable.

Weather month by month

  • November: Warmest of the three months (14-20 °C days), but also the wettest. Expect 6-9 rainy days spread across the month, with long sunny spells in between.
  • December: Cooler at 12-16 °C. Roughly 7 rainy days; the second half of the month is often drier and sunnier. Christmas markets and festive lights add atmosphere to Palma.
  • January: The coldest month on paper (9-15 °C days), but still mild by northern European standards. Rain eases off to around 5 rainy days. Local festivals fill the calendar.

The big winter driving advantage: Cap de Formentor is fully open

All summer, the Ma-2210 road to the Formentor lighthouse is closed to private cars between 10:00 and 22:00 (the 2026 restriction ran 15 May to 18 October). From November onwards, those restrictions are lifted and you can drive the full 30 km from Port de Pollenca to the lighthouse at any hour. The road features sharp hairpin bends above dramatic cliff faces, and winter light often makes the views even sharper than in summer. Allow a half day from Palma (roughly 70-75 km, about 1 hour 15 minutes in normal traffic with no stops).

The Ma-2210 to Formentor is narrow and winding. Drive slowly, use passing places, and check road conditions before setting off - winter rain can bring debris onto the road. Always verify rental conditions before taking gravel or unsurfaced tracks anywhere on the island.

Three scenic driving routes worth planning

Mallorca's roads range from the mountain switchbacks of the UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana to straight coastal runs along the south and east. Three routes work especially well in winter when traffic is light.

Route 1 - Ma-10 Tramuntana: Palma to Port de Soller via Valldemossa and Deia

This is the island's most celebrated drive. The Ma-10 winds through the Serra de Tramuntana past the village of Valldemossa (home of the Real Cartuja, linked to Chopin and George Sand), the cliffside hamlet of Deia and terraced Banyalbufar with its sea-facing vineyards. The road is approximately 55 km from Palma to Port de Soller and demands a full day if you stop properly.

Drive
Palma to Port de Soller via Ma-10: approximately 55 km, 1 hr 30 min driving time in normal traffic with no stops. Budget a full day for stops.
Parking
Small free car parks at Valldemossa and Deia; they fill quickly even in winter on dry weekends - arrive before 10:00.
Time to allow
Valldemossa Real Cartuja open most days; check current hours before visiting as they vary by season.
Families
Stop at Port de Soller harbour for lunch - the flat promenade is easy for young children and the vintage tram to Soller town is a short, enjoyable ride.

Route 2 - Cap de Formentor: Port de Pollenca to the Lighthouse

The 30 km Ma-2210 from Port de Pollenca to the Formentor lighthouse delivers sharp cliffs, turquoise water views and the Mirador Es Colomer viewpoint before the final stretch to the cape. In winter you drive the whole road freely - a rare privilege compared with the summer shuttle-bus-only regime. The lighthouse itself sits at the island's northernmost point.

Drive
Palma to Port de Pollenca: approximately 60 km, about 55 min in normal traffic. Port de Pollenca to the lighthouse: 30 km each way, about 45 min. Plan a half day from Palma or a full day if combining with the town of Pollenca.
Parking
Free parking near the lighthouse in winter. The small beach car park at Platja de Formentor is also unrestricted outside the seasonal ban period.
Time to allow
Lighthouse exterior only; no admission fee. Mirador Es Colomer viewpoint is a short walk from the roadside pull-off.
Families
Young children enjoy the lighthouse walk, but keep them well back from unfenced cliff edges. The road has no barriers in places.

Route 3 - East Coast: Palma to Coves del Drach (Dragon Caves) via Porto Cristo

The Dragon Caves near Porto Cristo are among the most visited attractions on the island for good reason: 1,200 metres of stalactite chambers lead to Lake Martel, one of the world's largest underground lakes, where every tour includes a short classical music concert performed from boats on the water. The temperature inside stays around 21 °C year-round, making it a perfect rainy-day stop. In winter, tours run at 10:30, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30, with the caves closed only on 25 December and 1 January.

Drive
Palma to Porto Cristo: approximately 60 km, about 1 hour in normal traffic. Free parking immediately outside the cave entrance.
Parking
Free car park at the cave entrance. Arrive early for the 10:30 session to secure a space before coach groups arrive.
Time to allow
Each session lasts about 1 hour. Book online in advance at cuevasdeldrach.com - walk-up tickets are usually available in winter but online booking avoids the box-office queue.
Families
Suitable for all ages. The internal temperature is stable and comfortable. The concert on the lake is a highlight for children. Note: the caves are dark and paths include steps.

Palma on foot: what stays open in winter

Palma works perfectly well without a car and is worth at least a full day. The Catedral de Mallorca (La Seu) is open Monday to Saturday 10:00-15:15 in winter. The Royal Palace of La Almudaina opens daily except Mondays (free on Sundays and Wednesdays 15:00-18:00). Castell de Bellver, a 14th-century circular castle with views across the bay, is a short drive or taxi from the centre. The Mercat de l'Olivar covered market is a good lunch stop - stalls sell local cheese, sobrassada, seafood and hot tapas.

Winter festivals and local events

  • Late November (end of month): Christmas markets begin at Plaza Mayor in Palma and at Puerto Portals marina.
  • 31 December: Festa de l'Estendard in Palma, one of Europe's oldest civil celebrations dating to the 13th century.
  • 16-17 January: Sant Antoni festival in Sa Pobla - bonfires, processions and traditional music. The town is about 50 km north of Palma (roughly 45 min in normal traffic).
  • Last Sunday of January: Fiesta del Quartero - a traditional harvest-end celebration revived by locals.

Nature: S'Albufera wetland reserve

S'Albufera Natural Park on the north coast is free to visit year-round (pick up a permit stamp at the visitor centre, open 09:00-16:00; closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day). Winter is one of the best seasons for birdwatching here, as migratory species from northern Europe use the wetlands as a refuge. The park is about 50 km from Palma (approximately 45 min in normal traffic). Park your car at the main entrance; trails inside are flat and suitable for bikes and families.

Practical driving notes for winter

  • Mountain passes on the Serra de Tramuntana can be slippery after heavy rain - check conditions before driving the Ma-10 in wet weather.
  • Village streets across the island are often very narrow; a smaller car is easier to manoeuvre and park.
  • Many northern resort areas have reduced services November-March; fill up with fuel in Palma or larger towns before heading into the mountains.
  • Check your rental agreement before driving on unsurfaced tracks, taking ferries, or crossing into other territories - the rental contract governs what is permitted, not this guide.
  • Palma city centre has a low-emission zone (ZBE); check current rules at the Palma ZBE page before driving in.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a car for Mallorca in winter?

Not for Palma itself - the city is compact and walkable, with good bus links. But a car makes a real difference for day trips: the Dragon Caves, Cap de Formentor, the Tramuntana villages and Sa Pobla festivals are all significantly easier with your own vehicle. Pick up your WoopDrive rental at Palma Airport (PMI) on arrival and return it before your flight.

Can I drive to Cap de Formentor in November, December and January?

Yes. The seasonal car ban on the Ma-2210 ran from 15 May to 18 October 2026. From November through to mid-May 2027, private cars can use the full road at any time. The restriction dates can change year to year, so check the Consell de Mallorca traffic page before your trip.

Is the Tramuntana mountain road safe to drive in winter?

The Ma-10 is a paved road maintained year-round, but it is narrow and has steep drops in places. After heavy rain, debris and surface water are possible. Drive slowly, use your horn on blind bends and check local weather and road reports before setting out. Snow on the high peaks is rare but not impossible in January.

What is the cheapest time within winter to visit?

Early December (before the Christmas holiday rush) and the first three weeks of January are typically the quietest and lowest-priced periods. The week between Christmas and New Year and the Sant Antoni festival dates in mid-January see a local uptick in activity.
