Vienna in Winter: Christmas Markets, Day Trips and Driving Tips

Vienna's winter season runs from early November through January, anchored by more than 20 Christmas markets and a packed cultural calendar. The city centre is compact and walkable, but a rental car from VIE airport unlocks some of the best day trips in Central Europe. This guide tells you what is open, when, and how to plan your driving days without surprises.

In short

  • Christmas markets open from 6 Nov 2026; most close 23-26 Dec, with Schönbrunn and the Prater Winter Market running to 6 Jan 2027
  • December daytime highs average 2-4°C; January averages 1-2°C with nights down to -6°C - dress in proper winter layers
  • Snow in Vienna city is possible but rarely settles; mountain routes (Semmering, Hallstatt) can involve snow and ice from November onward
  • Austrian law requires winter tires on any vehicle driven on snow, slush or ice between 1 Nov and 15 Apr - check your rental car is equipped
  • A motorway vignette (digital or sticker) is mandatory on all Austrian Autobahn and expressways - confirm whether your rental already includes one
  • VIE airport to city centre is roughly 18 km; allow 20-35 min in normal traffic, up to 50 min in rush hour (07:30-09:00 or 16:30-18:30)

Weather: what to expect November through January

November is cold and often overcast, with temperatures falling from around 8°C early in the month to near 2°C by the end. December averages 2-4°C during the day, sometimes dropping below 0°C at night. January is the coldest month, with daily highs around 1-2°C and nights regularly reaching -3 to -6°C. Snow can fall at any point but it rarely lies in the city centre for long - temperatures often hover just above freezing and fresh snowfall melts quickly. For mountain day trips, conditions are different: roads above 600 m can carry packed snow or ice from mid-November onwards.

Do you need a car in Vienna itself?

For a city-only stay, the answer is no. Vienna's U-Bahn, trams and buses cover all the major sights, Christmas markets are clustered on walkable squares, and parking in the centre is both limited and expensive. Most inner-district streets operate short-stay parking zones with a two-hour maximum - not practical for an all-day visit. A rental car earns its value on day trips beyond the city, where public transport becomes slower or stops running early in winter. Pick up the keys at VIE airport on the day you want to drive out, and return before your flight or when you head back to the city for the evening.

Christmas markets: dates and what stays open late in the season

The season opens earlier than most visitors expect. Schönbrunn Palace and Stephansplatz both start on 6 November, a full week before the flagship Rathausplatz market. Most others - Spittelberg, Am Hof, Freyung, Karlsplatz - follow between 13 and 20 November. If you are visiting after Christmas, note that the majority of markets close on 23 or 26 December. Only Schönbrunn (which switches to a New Year's format from 24 Dec) and the Winter Market at Riesenradplatz in the Prater continue to 6 January 2027. The Belvedere market runs to 31 December. Plan accordingly - many visitors arrive on 27 December expecting the Rathausplatz market to still be standing and find it gone.

  • Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt - 13 Nov to 26 Dec 2026, daily 10:00-22:00 (reduced 24 Dec). Biggest market in the city.
  • Stephansplatz Christmas Village - 6 Nov to 26 Dec 2026, daily 11:00-21:00 (reduced 24-26 Dec). Right outside St. Stephen's Cathedral.
  • Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market - 6 Nov 2026 to 6 Jan 2027. Transitions to a New Year's market after 24 Dec; imperial setting lit up at night.
  • Spittelberg - 13 Nov to 23 Dec 2026, Mon-Thu 14:00-21:00, Fri-Sun 10:00-21:00. Artisan-focused, narrow Biedermeier streets.
  • Art Advent Karlsplatz - 13 Nov to 23 Dec 2026, daily 12:00-20:00. Food stalls until 21:00.
  • Wintermarkt am Riesenradplatz (Prater) - 20 Nov 2026 to 6 Jan 2027, Mon-Fri 12:00-22:00, Sat-Sun 10:00-22:00. Only market open past Christmas into the new year alongside Schönbrunn.

Weekday evenings (Tuesday-Thursday) are noticeably quieter than weekends at all markets. If you visit Rathausplatz or Schönbrunn on a Saturday afternoon, expect dense crowds around the stalls and long queues for Punsch and roasted chestnuts.

Before you drive: vignette and winter tires

Motorway vignette: All Austrian motorways and expressways require a vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. It is sold as a digital permit (linked to your registration plate) or a physical sticker. Validity options are 1 day, 10 days, 2 months and annual - a 10-day digital vignette suits most short trips. The official source is shop.asfinag.at. Note: if you buy a 2-month or annual vignette online, it is valid only from the 18th day after purchase; 1-day and 10-day options can be set to immediate validity. Rental cars sometimes include a vignette already - confirm at the WoopDrive desk when you collect your keys, and verify the plate at the ASFINAG shop if you are unsure. Winter tires: Austrian law strictly requires winter tires (marked with the Alpine snowflake symbol, minimum 4 mm tread) whenever roads are covered in snow, slush or ice, between 1 November and 15 April. Any car rented in Austria should be fitted with winter tires during this period - verify this at key collection.

Day trip 1 - Wachau Valley (Melk and Durnstein)

Wachau Valley - Melk Abbey and Durnstein

The Wachau is a UNESCO-listed stretch of the Danube between Melk and Krems, about 90 km west of Vienna. In winter, Danube boat trips do not run and some riverside restaurants are closed, but the baroque Melk Abbey stays open, the ruined castle above Durnstein is accessible on foot, and the valley road along the river is one of the most scenic drives in Lower Austria even without leaves on the vines. Keep expectations realistic: this is a frost-and-stone winter landscape, not the green-and-gold version from spring.

Drive
Approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 15 min from VIE airport via the A1 westbound (normal traffic assumed, starting from VIE). Add 15-20 min if starting from the city centre. The valley road between Melk and Krems is a further 30 min end-to-end without stops.
Parking
Paid parking lots at Melk Abbey (follow signs from the A1 exit Melk). Street parking in Durnstein is very limited; arrive early. No ferry or gravel-road permission needed for this route.
Time to allow
Melk Abbey is open year-round; confirm current winter hours and admission prices at [stiftmelk.at](https://www.stiftmelk.at) before you go. Allow 1.5-2 hours for the abbey. Durnstein village and the castle ruin path take another 1-2 hours.
Families
Melk Abbey has an accessible main floor and is manageable with younger children. The Durnstein castle hike is a steep 20-30 min climb on an uneven path - ice on the path is possible in January; check conditions on the day.

Day trip 2 - Semmering alpine pass

Semmering - closest ski and snow day from Vienna

Semmering is the nearest alpine area to Vienna, sitting about 90 km south on the A2/S6. In winter it becomes the default snow-day for Viennese locals: the Hirschenkogel and Zauberberg ski areas together offer around 14 km of slopes, several of which are lit for night skiing. If there is not enough natural snow, the resort operates snowmaking systems. The cable car at Hirschenkogel typically opens mid-December subject to snow conditions - not guaranteed in November. This is an easy choice for a half-day if you just want to see Alpine scenery and a toboggan run without committing to a full ski trip.

Drive
Approximately 1 hour 15 min to 1 hour 30 min from VIE airport via the A2 south and then S6 (normal traffic assumed). The S6 section over the pass can carry snow; winter tires are essential.
Parking
Paid parking at the ski resort base stations. Confirm current parking fees at [zauberberg.at](https://www.zauberberg.at) or [hirschenkogel.at](https://www.hirschenkogel.at) - prices and availability change seasonally.
Time to allow
Cable car and ski lifts typically open mid-December, subject to snow. Verify opening status and lift ticket prices before departing - conditions can close runs even in January if temperatures spike.
Families
Toboggan run is suitable for families; the 3 km run at Hirschenkogel is a highlight for children. Ski rental is available at the resort base.

Day trip 3 - Bratislava, Slovakia (cross-border note)

Bratislava - the nearest foreign capital

Bratislava is roughly 80 km east of Vienna along the A4 and A6, making it the easiest cross-border day trip in Central Europe. The Slovak Old Town is compact, the castle is walkable from the centre, and the city has its own Christmas market running through December. In winter the drive itself is straightforward - the motorway is flat and well-maintained. Rental permissions note: crossing into Slovakia is a border crossing. Check your WoopDrive rental conditions before you go - not all rentals permit cross-border travel, and missing this step can void your insurance. Slovakia also requires its own digital motorway vignette for Slovak expressways.

Drive
Approximately 1 hour from VIE airport via the A4 east then A6 toward Bratislava (normal traffic assumed). Border crossing at Berg/Jarovce is typically quick but allow extra time on busy December weekends.
Parking
Paid parking garages in the Old Town area. Street parking in central Bratislava can be confusing for first-time visitors - a garage near Hviezdoslavovo namestie is a safe default.
Time to allow
Bratislava Christmas market typically runs through late December on the main square. Confirm 2026 dates and hours at [visitbratislava.com](https://www.visitbratislava.com) - hours and stall count vary by year.
Families
Old Town is flat and walkable; the castle involves a steep uphill walk. The Christmas market area is very family-friendly.

Frequently asked questions

Is a rental car useful if I am only visiting Vienna's Christmas markets?

Not really. The main markets - Rathausplatz, Stephansplatz, Schönbrunn, Spittelberg - are all reachable by U-Bahn or tram. Parking in central Vienna is expensive and limited to short stays. Pick up the car only on days when you plan to drive outside the city.

Does my rental car already have a vignette for Austrian motorways?

Some rental fleets include a vignette, others do not. Ask at the WoopDrive desk when you collect your physical keys. You can also verify whether a vignette is registered to your plate at shop.asfinag.at. Driving on the A4 or A1 without one carries an on-the-spot fine of up to €200.

Will the Semmering ski lifts be open in November?

Not reliably. The Hirschenkogel cable car typically opens mid-December, subject to snow coverage. November is hit-or-miss. Check current lift status at the resort's website before driving out.

Can I drive to Bratislava in my WoopDrive rental?

Only if your rental agreement explicitly permits cross-border travel into Slovakia. Border crossings are not automatically covered. Check your rental conditions before you leave - driving across without permission can void your insurance.

Are Danube river boats running in the Wachau in winter?

No. Wachau boat services do not operate in winter. The car or train is the only way to visit the valley between November and March.

January visitors get a quieter, cheaper Vienna: the Christmas markets are gone (except the Prater and Schönbrunn New Year's market through 6 Jan), museum queues are shorter, and hotel rates drop. The Staatsoper and Musikverein are in full season. Semmering skiing is more reliable for snow in January than December.
