Almond blossom in Mallorca by car: a late-winter road trip from Palma (late January to early March)
Between late January and early March, weeks before the first beach day, the interior of Mallorca turns white and pale pink. Millions of almond trees flower across the plain and around the villages at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana, while over the mountains the Sóller valley hangs heavy with oranges. Distances are short: from Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) the almond lanes of Santa Maria del Camí are about 20 minutes away, Alaró and Sóller about half an hour, Son Servera a little under an hour. Here is a three-day plan with the winter road and parking rules you need.

When and where the almond trees flower
Mallorca's almond trees need fewer than 400 hours of winter cold before they flower, so they bloom early: from the end of January or early February until about mid-March. In 2026 the trees near Palma opened ahead of schedule. A late frost or a windy week can strip a field in days, so when you see a good one, stop then. Almonds spread across the island in the late 19th century, after phylloxera destroyed the vineyards. The best blossom country is the Raiguer, the farmland between Palma and Inca at the foot of the mountains, followed by the plain around Llucmajor and the east around Son Servera.
Late winter, month by month
- Late January - highs around 13 °C, lows near 5 °C, about 10 hours of daylight and some rain on 14 days. First blossom near Palma and the fire festivals.
- February - the heart of the season, highs around 14 °C, rain on about 12 days. The Raiguer and the plain are at their whitest.
- Early March - highs around 15 °C, about 12 hours of daylight. Late blossom in cooler spots and the main orange harvest in Sóller.

Day 1: the almond lanes of the Raiguer
Santa Maria del Camí, Sencelles and Biniagual
Marratxí and Santa Maria del Camí sit at the centre of one of the island's main almond-growing areas, with a mild microclimate of their own, and the groves continue towards Consell, Sencelles and Lloseta. Leave the main road for the narrow lanes between Binissalem and Sencelles, ending at Biniagual, a hamlet of about 14 houses with origins in the Muslim period.
- Drive
- About 22 km from PMI to Santa Maria del Camí, roughly 20 minutes.
- Parking
- Park in the villages or in proper lay-bys only; the lanes are narrow and farm gates must stay clear.
- Time to allow
- Best in the morning or late afternoon light. The groves are private farmland, so enjoy them from the lane.
- Families
- Short drives between villages, easy with small children.
Alaró and the Castell d'Alaró
Alaró sits below the Puig d'Alaró, with almond fields across the valley. On the summit stand the Gothic ruins of a 14th-century castle, garrisoned until 1741, an oratory from 1622 and a small inn with a restaurant. The signed path starts in the village on the road to Orient.
- Drive
- About 32 km from PMI, roughly 30 minutes.
- Parking
- To shorten the walk, drive towards Es Verger, where the paved road ends, and use the restaurant car park.
- Time to allow
- The full path is 4.2 km, rated easy to medium: about 3 h 45 min on foot, or about 1 h 15 min if you drive the first part.
- Families
- Wear walking shoes and allow extra time with children.
Bunyola, Raixa and the Coll de Sóller
Bunyola is ringed by almond groves, and more trees line the old road up to the Coll de Sóller pass. From the Raixa estate an easy forest track climbs about 4 km to the old Raixeta farmhouse.
- Drive
- Bunyola is on the road from Palma to Sóller, before the tunnel.
- Parking
- Use the Raixa car park for the walk; in Bunyola, park on the edge of the centre.
- Time to allow
- The Coll de Sóller road has many tight bends and is far slower than the tunnel; drive it in daylight and dry weather.
- Families
- An easy walk for children.
Day 2: the Sóller valley in orange season

Over the mountains, the Sóller valley swaps almond blossom for citrus. The trees are full of fruit by January: the early Navelina comes first, the small, sweet Canoneta is picked in February and March, and most oranges are harvested in March. The season peaks in late March or early April with the Fira de sa Taronja, when the market square is decorated with fruit and restaurants serve orange menus. The fast way in is the Ma-11 tunnel, free of tolls since 2017; the scenic way is the old road over the Coll de Sóller.
Sóller and Fornalutx
Sit in Sóller's main square with a fresh orange juice, then ride the old wooden tram down to the port. Fornalutx, a few kilometres up the valley, is a steep stone village of stairways and terraced citrus groves, quiet on a February weekday.
- Drive
- About 31 km from PMI to Sóller through the tunnel, roughly 30-35 minutes; Fornalutx is about 38 km, roughly 40 minutes.
- Parking
- Parking in Sóller is scarce and mostly paid; use the car parks on the edge of town. In Fornalutx, park at the village entrance.
- Time to allow
- Weekdays are calmest. Come in February or March for the harvest, or late March to early April for the fair.
- Families
- The tram to the port is the easy win with children; Fornalutx has many steps.

Valldemossa and Deià lie on this side of the island too, and in late winter the blossom stands out against the green slopes behind them. The classic Ma-10 drive through both villages is in our Mallorca winter guide, so this route stays on the almond side of the mountains.

Day 3: the plain and the east
Puig de Randa and the Llucmajor almond country
South-east of Palma, the farmland around Llucmajor is full of almond groves and quiet roads. Climb the Puig de Randa, one of the island's great viewpoints, for a view across the plain; the Puig de Bonany near Petra and the Santuari de Sant Salvador near Felanitx are two more.
- Drive
- Randa is the closest of these viewpoints to the airport, inland between Algaida and Llucmajor.
- Parking
- Use the car parks at the top and do not stop on the narrow road up.
- Time to allow
- Go on a clear day, as haze hides the plain.
- Families
- Short walks at the top break up a driving day.
Son Servera and the east
The east has its own blossom country around Manacor, Sant Llorenç and Son Servera. Son Servera has held an almond blossom fair on the first Sunday of February since 2010.
- Drive
- About 66 km from PMI, a little under an hour.
- Parking
- On fair day, arrive early and park on the edge of the village.
- Time to allow
- In mid-January, combine the east with the Sant Antoni fires in Manacor or Artà.
- Families
- A relaxed morning out for all ages.
Mountain roads in winter

The Ma-10 through the Serra de Tramuntana is open all year, but it is narrow and exposed. When snow fell in January 2023, the Consell de Mallorca closed it from the Lluc monastery to the Ses Barques viewpoint above Sóller (km 20 to 45), plus the road to Sa Calobra, reopening later that day. Before a mountain day, check the Consell de Mallorca road information and weather warnings, and keep a plan B on the plain, where the almond trees are anyway.
January fire festivals
- Sant Antoni, 16-17 January: Mallorca's great night of fire for the patron saint of animals. Sa Pobla, Manacor and Artà hold the most spectacular celebrations, with foguerons (bonfires) and dimonis (demons). In 2027 the eve falls on a Saturday.
- Sant Sebastià, Palma, 20 January: the feast of Palma's patron saint. On the eve, 19 January (a Tuesday in 2027), there are concerts in the squares and bonfires where people toast local produce.
- First Sunday of February: the almond blossom fair in Son Servera; check the programme with the town.
Parking in Palma: ORA blue zones
- Blue lines mark ORA paid parking: Monday to Friday 9:00-14:00 and 16:30-20:00, Saturday 9:00-14:00. Saturday afternoons and Sundays are free.
- The maximum stay is 90 minutes; buy a ticket at the ORA machine or a tobacconist and display it.
- From 1 January 2027 the paid area roughly doubles, from about 12,000 to 24,000 spaces, in neighbourhoods such as Foners, Pere Garau Est and Son Oliva. Read the signs even where parking used to be free.
- Parts of the old town are ACIRE restricted areas behind retractable bollards; do not follow the navigation into them.
- For longer stays, Palma's 16 public underground car parks have about 4,500 spaces.
